An Arab-themed
space is set up till 30 June at the Sky Garden(11F) of Hyundai Department Store’s
Trade Center Store in Gangnam. The recent surge of foreign tourists after the
COVID-19, the nationalities of visitors to Hyundai Department Store are diversifying
to include the Middle East. Consequently, Hyundai Department Store has
organized an event that allows tourists to experience the culture of their home
country in another country while providing domestic visitors with an experience
reminiscent of traveling abroad.
The Trade Center
Store was selected as the venue for this event as it attracts a large number of
foreign tourists. Thanks to its geographical advantage of being near the city
airport terminal and hotels, the Trade Center Store has seen a nearly fivefold
increase year-over-year in foreigner purchases from January to May this year.
Tourists from over 70 countries, including the Middle East, Canada, Europe, Indonesia,
Thailand, and the United States are visiting the Trade Center Store to enjoy
shopping and dining.
Through “Arabian days
and nights” cultural event, at the rooftop of the Sky Garden on the 11th floor
of the Trade Center Store will be filled with Arabian sights and sounds. Staffs
dressed in traditional Arab costumes will introduce Arab culture and visitors
may take photos to capture the Arab atmosphere. The Garden is turned into
Arabian-styled relaxing area similar to “Majlis”
– meaning sitting places in Arabic, which is an Arabian cultural and social
space listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From 23 to 25
June, customers who present their same-day purchase receipts can get Arabian
desserts such as dates and tea as gifts. Customers who post photos taken at the
photo zone on Instagram or other social media accounts will also receive a book
titled “This is Arab Culture.” Also during the weekends of 24 and 25 June,
visitors may enjoy live performances by Arab musicians featuring traditional
Arab instruments such as “oud(similar
to guitar)” and “darbuka(drum) as
well as DJ’s performance to get a vibe of Arab atmosphere and relax in the hidden
gems to take a break and get to know more about Arab culture.
Korea-Arab
Society (KAS), established in 2008, is a non-profit organization funded by both
Korean and the 22 Arab governments and related businesses to enhance mutual
understanding between Korea and the Arab world by carrying out cultural and
people-to-people exchange programs such as Arab Cultural Festival, Korea-Arab
Friendship Caravan and the Korea-Middle East Cooperation Forum. With the President,
Mr Christopher Koo, who is the Chairman of Korea International Trade
Association(KITA), and the Vice-President, Dr. Chafik Rachadi, Dean of Arab
Diplomatic Corps in Seoul and the Ambassador of Morocco to Korea, KAS aims to
forge friendship and build wider network among Koreans and Arabs in diverse
sectors.
